Competitions
before October 2006
2011 CHRISTMAS COMPETITION Despite my usual scattiness (two question 27s, unanswerable question 28, wrong singer for question 43, a bit of nonsense in question 49) there were some very commendable entries - including one from the consistent Mr John Loaring, who had every possible correct answer, and is therefore this year's winner. And the answers were (probably!).. 1-1000, 2-3, 3-4, 4-40, 5-24, 6-7, 7-2, 8-3, 9-8, 10-2, 11-2, 12-4, 13-100, 14-Once, 15-1, 16-12, 17-20, 18-2, 19-3, 20-2, 21-16, 22-76, 23-7, 24-10, 25-12, 26-7, 27-8, 27-7, 28-Whatever you say, 29-10, 30-99, 31-10, 32-16, 33-8, 34-5, 35-9, 36-6, 37-Ebony Eyes, 38-Billy Fury, 39-roulette, 40-Traffic, 41-5, 42-5, 43-If the singer had been Brian Adams, it would have been 69, 44-6.05, 45-8, 46-10, 47-12th, 48-1910, 49-if Louise Armstrong hadn't sung, it would have been him, 50-Blowing In The Wind. Many thanks to everyone who entered, and have a very happy year in 2012. ----- Although the regular bi-monthly competitions have been discontinued, I am maintaining the tradition of a Christmas quiz, to keep you occupied through the holidays. Some questions, I think, will cause lots of problems - but then, if it was easy, it wouldn't be fun, would it? The winner can choose any two Peaksoft label CDs, or DVDs. Answers must be emailed to hltw@peaksoft.co.uk using the subject "xmascompo", to arrive by 11.59pm on December 31, and as usual, my answers are right, even when they are wrong. The questions all refer to UK chart hits from the 1950s and 1960s, except for one, which refers to a year in the 1960s. This year, everyone on the BillyFury.com and Peaksoft emailing lists has also been invited to take part, so I anticipate a healthy entry. I can't remember when anyone last scored 100% in our Christmas competition, so if you miss a few answers, don't be afraid to enter. FEBRUARY COMPETITION Hi everyone, I hope you like this one. No prize - this one's just for fun. Cathy. NAME A TOWN OR CITY IN BRITAIN Well done to Mags Cummings, Jean Todd,
John Loaring, Marguerite Holloway, Babs Hughes, Jan Cooke and Rosemary
Savage who all submitted the correct answers .... Thanks all for your
entries ... CHRISTMAS/NEW YEAR BUMPER QUIZ (Posed by Harry) The answers appear below. I had the extraordinary total of 34 entries, and I'm very grateful for the kind remarks that several people made. Question 8 was a problem. In the general introduction, I said that all of the questions related to the 1950s and 1960s, but in the preamble to question 8, I referred to Billy failing to achieve a number 1 in the 1960s, which clearly was a possible cause of confusion. As alll five of the named artists failed to achieve a number 1 in the NME charts in the 1960s, but two had number 1s in the 1950s, I allowed answers of either 3 or 5. That aside, the most troublesome questions were, as I expected, 41 and 42, which referenced singles from Billy's later years. I allowed Wondrous Place as an alternative answer to number 33. The clear winner was Chris Deverell, who will be receiving the prize of the BFITOY 2011 calendar. Runners-up were Margaret Dewick, John Loaring, Rosemary Savage and Cathy Homann, but congratulations to everyone who entered. Please email your address to me, Chris. ----- Fifty questions this year, and I won't be surprised if no one gets 100%, so please enter, even if you've missed a few. Some are very easy and some are real toughies. The prize is a 2011 Billy Fury calendar - as entries don't close until 12.01am on January 3, I'm afraid you'll miss a few days' use. Please email your entries for this one to me, and not to Cathy, by clicking this link, and making the subject COMPO. As usual, my answers are right, even if I'm wrong. All of the questions, except a few Billy Fury ones, relate to records that appeared in the UK charts in the 1950s and 1960s. Some Fury records are from the 1970s and 1980s. The NME chart, as always, is regarded as authoritative. 1 Big Bad John killed a feller from which state?

chance to jump in with a bumper Christmas/New Year quiz. It's
supposed to be difficult, so please don't be afraid to enter if you
don't find all of the answers. I've tried to ensure that some
